Of this, 12.6 GW came from large-scale solar projects, clearly showing that utility-scale solar remains the backbone of India’s clean-energy transition.

This growth is not just a quarterly spike; it reflects a structural acceleration in India’s renewable energy journey. Solar accounted for the majority of new power capacity added during the quarter, underlining its role as the preferred source of future electricity. With cumulative solar capacity crossing 150 GW by March 2026, India has moved from ambition to execution at scale.

Several factors drove this record performance. Developers accelerated commissioning ahead of upcoming policy changes, especially the implementation of ALMM List-II from June 2026. Improved transmission readiness in key solar states also helped projects move faster from construction to commissioning. At the same time, open access solar continued to gain momentum as commercial and industrial consumers sought cleaner and more cost-effective power.

Gujarat and Rajasthan emerged as the clear leaders in large-scale solar deployment, together contributing nearly four-fifths of the quarterly large-scale additions. Maharashtra also remained an important market, reflecting the broadening geography of India’s solar growth.

The larger message is clear: solar is no longer an alternative source of power for India — it is becoming the central pillar of energy security, industrial competitiveness, and decarbonisation. As power demand rises from manufacturing, urbanisation, electric mobility, green hydrogen, and data centres, India will need clean electricity at unprecedented scale.

However, the next phase of growth will require more than solar capacity alone. Transmission, storage, forecasting, flexible generation, and AI-led dispatch will become critical. Solar must now be integrated with batteries, pumped storage, wind, and digital grid systems to deliver reliable round-the-clock green power.

India’s Q1 2026 performance is therefore more than a capacity milestone. It is a signal that the country is entering a new solar era — one where clean energy becomes the foundation of economic growth, energy independence, and global leadership.

India’s solar sector delivered a landmark performance in the first quarter of 2026, installing a record 15.3 GW of solar capacity — the highest quarterly addition ever recorded.
